Introduction by the Chief Information Officer

The Prime Minister has set the CIO Council members and their staff the mission of “ensuring that IT supports the business transformation of Government itself so that we can provide better, more efficient, public services.”

What is clear to each and every member of the CIO Council is that our public services are hugely complex to deliver, and we concluded that we simply cannot transform complex, joined up, national services without sustained investment in information technology. There are few if any comparable private sector systems as large or complex as those we face.

But IT investment alone is not the answer. Transformation only occurs when IT is deployed strategically to support joined up processes which help people give and receive good and trusted service; and when the transformation itself is carefully managed by experienced professionals in partnership with ‘best of breed’ suppliers.

Whilst it seldom makes front page headlines, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of what can be done and we get it right most of the time.

The CIO Council exists to improve public service delivery and I am proud of the approach the CIO Council is taking to its work. We are here to deliver much more than IT projects and we do it by adding value rather than controlling or dictating. We are realistic in our programme and because of this we will deliver on our commitments. By working in these ways we are laying the foundation for sustainable and long term business transformation of government.
